The imaginary marketing tribunal does not exist


Hey Reader!

I posted a reel on Instagram a week or so ago, and upon watching it back and seeing how bad my hair looked in it, I spent a genuinely embarrassing amount of time wondering if I should take it down and repost.

But I went against that instinct and left it up.

Guess what? Nobody said a word. Not one person. And if anyone noticed, they'd already moved on before I even started having my little internal crisis about it.

This week's Bold Bite is about exactly this concept: the spotlight effect.

In short, we massively overestimate how much other people are paying attention to us.

That email you agonized over for 45 minutes? Most people skimmed it in about 12 seconds. The reel you re-recorded six times? A chunk of your followers didn't even read the caption.

Your audience is watching your content while they're making dinner or sitting on the toilet, worrying about the thing they said on their own sales call last Tuesday.

Which means the stakes are so much lower than you've been treating them. You can try something weird. You can post something a little messy and experimental. The imaginary branding tribunal you've been dressing for does not exist.
